Mick
Johnstone
Mick started Muay Thai in 1994 at the old town hall in Cumbernauld
with one of the best instructors he had met, Mr Bobby Quinn. The
camp name was Sitnarong run by John Craig under the guidance of
master Sken. He was the first person to call Bobby and the first
through the doors when he started his first class.
Mick has participated in many martial arts, such as boxing for a
year and half when he was a kid. He then moved on to spirit combat,
a form of karate but the instructor liked his drink too much and
as a youngster he thought this was not a very good role model to
look up to, so after about a year and a yellow belt later Mick stopped
attending.
He gave up martial arts for a few years and took up football. When
the pressures of school bullying hit home he thought he would be
better off back in the fighting game. Mick started training in full
contact kickboxing with a well-known local instructor, the one and
only Mr Eddie McPhee. He lasted 5 1/2 long punishing years
After about a year of training and going to see his first live bout
of Muay Thai in the Motherwell Civic centre, that’s when his
training and hunger for fighting started. Within the year Mick had
his first bout, which he won. Since that time he has had 9 fights
and has now retired from the fight scene due to a recurring injury.
Mick has trained with the best students in Scotland, but in his
mind one sticks out more than the others, and that would have to
be Mr Thomas Ross. Tommy was the best training partner Mick had
ever come across and would have made it to the big time in the ring
but for his nerves (cheers Tommy).
Matt Duncan
Matt Duncan started out like a lot of people sitting on the couch
smoking cigarettes and piling on the pounds.
In Jan 2001 he saw a flyer in the local shop advertising Muay Thai
boxing in the Denny centre. Matt was hooked after his first training
session and after the first few months Matts life had changed for
the better. Training had given Matt confidence, self esteem and
a level of fitness he could only dream about. Within 8 months Matt
had won his first fight and over the next 3 years he had 11 fights
to his credit.
During his fight career Matt travelled to Kazakhstan with the Scotland
fight team to compete in the world amateur championships. He was
also involved in one of the best Thai bouts Scotland has seen when
he fought Mark Grainger from fighting fit gym in a Scottish title
eliminator. He later went on to win the S.T.B.A Scottish title when
he defeated John Cullen from Nia Khanom Tom in May of 2005. In preparation
for these fights Matt travelled to Thailand for one month with his
training partner Rab Burt.
Matt is sincerely grateful to Bobby Quinn without Thai boxing none
of these opportunities would have happened and Matt would never
have seen the likes of Kazakhstan and Thailand.
Matt is now retired from fighting and is happily married to Debbie
who gave birth to young Zac in 2007.
Matt would like to thank his instructor and friend Bobby Quinn and
all the Muay Thai community for their friendship over the years.
